About

David Schweickart is Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics (University of Virginia) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy (Ohio State University).

Professor Schweickart has taught at Loyola since 1975, including three one-year terms at the Loyola Rome Center. He has been a Visiting Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kentucky, and a Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Schweickart was voted Faculty-Member-of-the-Year for 1998-99 by the Loyola University Faculty Council.  He served as a Humanities Representative on Faculty Council, 2000-2010.

Dr. Schweickart's primary areas of research are social and political philosophy, philosophy and economics, and Marxism. He also has major interests in feminist theory, existentialism, critical theory and race and racism.

Schweickart has published extensively on these topics; his work has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, French, Norwegian, Slovak, Farsi, and Catalan.

Against Capitalism (Cambridge Univ. Press, 1993, and Westview Press, 1996), with a Spanish translation Mas alla del capitalismo, in 1997, and with a Chinese translation in 2003 by Renmin Univ. Press in Beijing;

Capitalism or Worker Control? An Ethical and Economic Appraisal (Praeger, 1980).

In addition, Dr. Schweickart has published many articles in such journals as Theoria, Review of Radical Political Economics, Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Economics and Philosophy, Critical Review, Science and Society, Social Theory and Practice, Praxis International, and The National Women's Studies Association Journal.

Over the years Dr. Schweickart has served as faculty advisor to Loyola's Amnesty International chapter, the Loyola Organization in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, and Loyola Students for Worker Justice. He co-chaired the Committee on the Racial Climate at Loyola

Dr. Schweickart has given invited presentations in many countries: the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, Norway, the Philippines and China.
