Gannon Center for Women and Leadership

Undergraduate Leadership Award

The Gannon Center for Women and Leadership is pleased to announce the recipient of the tenth annual Undergraduate Leadership Award: Kate Bove.

Kate graduates in May 2023 with a major in Mathematics and plans to pursue in a career in teaching. Already as an undergraduate, she has served as a teaching assistant and substitute teacher in Chicago Public Schools. She described her personal mission as wanting to “change [her students’] perspectives about mathematics.” This same dedication to mathematics education extends to her service on campus. She provides peer tutoring to college students in Calculus classes and also prepares local high school students for college entrance exams through the GEAR UP Alliance. As president of Loyola’s Math & Statistics Club, she spearheaded programs highlighting the contributions of underrepresented communities to the field of mathematics, such as women, LGBTQ, and Black mathematicians. As an undergraduate researcher, she used game theory and computational simulations to study the environmental effects of habitat loss.

The selection committee was incredibly impressed with all of the amazing students who were nominated for this award. All are accomplished scholars and dedicated leaders for social justice.
