Johnson Scholars
Carroll and Adelaide Johnson Scholarship
The Carroll and Adelaide Johnson Scholarship Fund offers rising juniors of Loyola University Chicago an opportunity to conduct a two-year research project, under the mentorship of a Loyola faculty member, that addresses a social justice issue related to women and/or gender. The Johnsons established the fund through Loyola's Gannon Center for Women and Leadership for students with demonstrated financial need.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Students must have junior standing when entering the program, so students must apply in spring of their sophomore year.
- Students of any major are welcome to apply, and the program is open to research projects in any academic field.
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
- Students must demonstrate financial need – i.e., they cannot already be receiving a full-tuition scholarship or multiple scholarships that cover the full cost of tuition.
- Students must already have a faculty mentor who has agreed to work with them for the duration of the research project. This faculty mentor must be a full-time faculty member at Loyola.
Program Details:
- Students must apply to the program by March 1 of their sophomore year through the Loyola Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (LUROP) application portal.
- Applicants will be notified about their status in mid-April of the same year.
- Johnson Scholars are expected to begin their research work in the fall semester of their junior year and continue through May of their senior year. Research work during the summer is permitted but not required.
- Johnson Scholars will receive an annual scholarship of $4,000 ($2,000 per semester) in recognition of their research work. The scholarship is paid directly to a student’s tuition account in LOCUS and is “tuition-restricted”, meaning that it cannot be used for room, board, fees, or other non-tuition costs.
- Each Johnson Scholar, in collaboration with their Loyola faculty mentor, also has access to an annual budget of $1500 for research-related expenses.
- Johnson Scholars are expected to present their research work annually at Loyola’s Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium, held annually in late April.
- Johnson Scholar funding is contingent on the Johnson Scholar’s full participation in their research work and program expectations. Johnson Scholars are expected to maintain timely communication with Gannon Center and LUROP staff related to their research project logistics. New Johnson Scholars and their Loyola faculty mentors participate in an orientation meeting with Gannon Center staff in the fall of their junior year. Additionally, all Johnson Scholars meet together as a group twice per year to share about their research work.
