Developmental Leave Committee
The College of Arts and Sciences/Developmental Leave Committee (CAS/DLC) is charged with the review of applications for paid developmental leave. The CAS/DLC reports are advisory to the Dean’s reviews of applications and recommendations to the Provost. The Dean undertakes this process in coordination with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. The review process is multilayered and follows reviews by department entities and chairpersons and precedes the review of the CAS Dean, which is followed by LUC/Faculty Development Review Committee and provost-level reviews. Each of the succeeding layers incorporates the evaluations of those preceding them.
Membership Process: The CAS/DLC is a representative body that includes Associate Professors and/or Full Professors, two from each division: Basic Sciences (Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics), Humanities (Classical Studies, English, Fine & Performing Arts, History, Modern Languages & Literature, Philosophy, and Theology), and Social Sciences (Anthropology, Criminal Justice & Criminology, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology). All members of the committee serve three-year renewable appointments, for a maximum of two consecutive terms. CAS faculty may not serve concurrently on the Rank and Tenure Committee and the CAS/DLC. The CAS/DLC members are selected by a CAS Advisory Committee (AC) comprised of CAS department chairs from all three divisions of CAS. The AC will be presented with the names of all Full and Associate Professors within CAS, divided by division and department. They will be asked to select for service those candidates, who they deem eligible, building on their in-depth knowledge of the capabilities, interests, and service histories of these Full and Associate Professors. The AC will approach the selected candidates and solicit their agreement to serve, informing the Dean who will send a letter formalizing the appointment.
