Bren Murphy Scholarship Application

The Bren Ortega Murphy Memorial Scholarship honors Dr. Bren Adair Ortega Murphy, Professor Emerita, who inspired and mentored countless students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends during her 36-year career at Loyola University Chicago. The scholarship is also to honor and support undergraduate students who embody Dr. Murphy's spirit and who major in the School of Communication or the Women’s Studies and Gender Studies Program, where Dr. Murphy had a longtime dual appointment at the University.  

Dr. Murphy pursued teaching, research, and community projects on a wide variety of topics, including:  

• Children's literature and film 
• History of women religious, especially Catholic nuns  
• Rhetoric, storytelling, and gender  
• Community and story  
• Feminist history, rhetoric, and activism  
• Gender and film  

The scholarship committee invites applications from sophomore and junior students who are majoring or minoring in Women’s Studies & Gender Studies or any program in the School of Communication. 

Deadline for applications is Friday April 5, 2024. Awardees will be notified by April 29 and celebrated at a Fall 2024 Memorial Event.
