Prerequisite: Completion of Pediatrics clerkship and fourth year standing.

This is a non-clinical elective.

Description: The goal of this elective is to extend knowledge the student has learned as an M3 during his or her pediatric clinical rotation and also to begin learning how to be an effective clinical educator. The specific roles will include being a mentor to junior team members, presenting topical reviews of the current state of knowledge in areas relevant to patients on service, as well as presenting new research or conducting mini journal clubs. Students will be expected to be a part of the inpatient pediatrics team (assigned to either team A or team B) and will be present for handoff at 6am. The student will assist the M3 students in seeing their patients and performing a pediatric history and physical, navigating the electronic medical record, and helping them prepare their notes and presentations for rounds. The student will also attend morning report/educational conferences, attending rounds, as well as hematology/oncology rounds at 1pm. The student will not be expected to come in on the weekends. 
Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the basis of each of the eight core objectives. By the end of the rotation, students should feel more comfortable in the role of “teacher” when on the floor, to prepare them for residency and a career in academic medicine. The student should also be an active member of the team and help with all aspects of patient care. The grading will be pass/fail with a passing grade demonstrating competencies in mentorship of the M3 students, topic presentations to the team, and overall clinical performance. The course directors will provide mid-elective feedback and will also determine the final grade based on observed teaching performance and feedback from junior students.
