Prerequisite: Completion of Pediatrics clerkship.
Special Note:

All interested students are required to write a letter of intent, stating their interest in the elective (and their interest in Loyola, for visiting students). This will be reviewed by the Elective Director. After review of letter by the Elective Director, students will be notified of approval/denial of rotation. Loyola students, please email letter to department contact listed. Visiting students, please upload your letter to your VSLO supplemental documents.

*Students may be asked to attend the elective at Lutheran General Hospital as well.

Description: This elective will introduce students to the variety of gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders in pediatric patients. In addition, the student will also be exposed to the use of complementary/alternative medicine in children, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal medicine and mind/body medicine. He/she will participate in pediatric gastroenterology clinics, and see hospital patients for consultations. The student will be encouraged to attend procedures such as endoscopies and manometric procedures. Each student will be expected to prepare and present a topic of their choice within the field of pediatric gastroenterology.
Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated by their active participation in clinic and on rounds, as well as case presentations and their topic presentation.
