The goal of the rotation is to expose students to the full spectrum of point-of-care ultrasonography and to allow the students to apply that knowledge in the evaluation of the acute patient presenting to the Emergency Department. During the four-week rotation, students will complete assigned didactics and be expected to perform a minimum of 125 scans that will be evaluated by ultrasound faculty. By the end of the rotation, students should be able to obtain images of good quality in core emergency ultrasound applications, provide basic interpretations of images, and answer focused questions related to point-of-care ultrasonography. In addition, they will present an article relevant to ultrasound the last week of the rotation. Students should expect to work a shift any day Mon-Sun and any time for an 8 hour period, generally at least 1 weekend and 2 overnights. These shifts will be spread out over the 4 week period. |
Method of Evaluation: |
Students will be evaluated on the basis of each of the seven core objectives. By the end of the rotation, students should be able to obtain images of good quality in core emergency ultrasound applications, provide basic interpretations of images, and answer focused questions related to point-of-care ultrasonography. Evaluations will be based on the clarity of their ultrasound article presentation, timely completion of all rotation requirements, and demonstration of professionalism. Participation at the weekly scan review sessions is mandatory and absence will result in an automatic fail. The course directors will determine the final grade. Course is graded as pass/fail only. |
