Prerequisite: | Available to third and fourth year students. |

Description: |
The goal of this four-week rotation is to understand the basic principles involved in the anesthetic and perioperative care of the surgical patient. In addition to an introduction to the basic anesthetic techniques, skills and drugs, we will also cover assessment and management of the airway, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and other medical conditions perioperatively. Also, to be covered is pain management, ambulatory surgery anesthesia and mechanical ventilator management. Experience can be provided in the various subspecialties of anesthesia (Pediatrics, OB, Neuro, CV). Students are expected to actively participate in the care of patients during this rotation (pre-op, intra-op, and post-op). Also, attendance at all didactic lectures is mandatory. This will allow them to demonstrate proficiency at managing (pre-op through post-op) a simple anesthetic case. The Medical Student grades will be weighed as follows: Attendance, participation and clinical evaluation = 30%; Daily reading and written assignments = 30%; Post-test = 15%; OCSE simulator = 15%; and Case Presentation = 10%, for a total point value of 100%. |
Method of Evaluation: |
Evaluation will include reports of supervising residents and faculty, attendance at didactic lectures and performance in written test and oral case discussion. |
