In Memoriam: Mine Cinar, PhD
We mourn the death of Mine Cinar, PhD, professor in the Quinlan School of Business, who passed away on June 5, 2024.
Cinar joined the faculty of Loyola in January 1983 and was a remarkable teacher, researcher, and colleague over the last 41 years. Her colleagues describe her as kind, generous, and selfless in all that she did.
Cinar was dedicated to the countless undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA students she taught, and was twice named Faculty of the Year by the Quinlan School of Business. Just last month, she accompanied EMBA students on a two-week study abroad trip to Europe, visiting Vienna and Prague. Within Quinlan, Cinar established the Center for International Business in 2009 and directed it until her passing, and she advised the International Business Society, a student organization encouraging international relations, trade, and knowledge. Her research focused on global economic development, including women, finance, and ecology; applied econometrics; and game theory.
Cinar was deeply engaged in the life of the University as well. She directed the Ricci Scholars Program, a two-semester study abroad research program for outstanding undergraduates. Additionally, she was elected to the University’s Faculty Development Review Committee in 2021 and served as chair of the committee from 2022 to spring 2024. As chair, she played a significant role in research excellence at Loyola.
Cinar completed her PhD in Econometrics at Texas A&M University and her MA in Economics at Vanderbilt University. She received her BA degree in Economics from Robert College/Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and was a Fulbright-Hays graduate student in the United States.
In accordance with her and her family’s wishes, Cinar was buried with her mother and father in Izmir, Turkey. Donations can be made in her name to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
Please keep Mine Cinar, her family and friends, and all the lives she touched in your thoughts and prayers.
