Admissions

Application Deadlines

To be considered for financial assistance, the deadline for the fall semester is February 15th. We continue to consider applications through June 30th. The deadline for the spring semester is November 30th.

Application Materials

We assess applications for both fit to our program and academic preparation. Program application requirements will include all or a combination of the following materials: application, resume/CV, statement of purpose, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Complete details regarding application requirements are found within a programs page.

Letters of Recommendation

Students interested in the JDD/MPP dual program, may use the letters submitted for their JDD application for admission for their MPP application. Please note, you will receive separate admission responses from each program.

If you’re a current undergraduate student, two letters should be written by a faculty member who will know, and can speak to, your academic abilities. These letters should include references to your motivation and interest in policy, your general level of involvement in classes or extracurricular activities, and hard or soft skills displayed in work or volunteer activities.

If you’re not a current undergraduate student, we do not expect you to secure letters from faculty. Alternatively, two letters should be written by professionals in your field. The same topics should be addressed: motivation and interest in policy or cities, assessment of hard and soft skills as shown by your work. The more details and examples that can be provided, the more helpful the letter will be in our understanding of your potential fit with the program.

Statement of Purpose

For all programs, we are very interested in your statement of purpose. We want to know why you are interested in public policy or urban affairs and what your plans are for the future.

Your statement of purpose should be about 1,000 words and address the following topics:
  • Why are you interested in public policy or urban affairs?
  • What motivated you to pursue these topics?
  • Are there specific issues that you want to impact? (e.g. affordable housing, immigration policy, economic, community development, etc.)
  • What type of work do you anticipate doing in your career?
  • How do you think this degree will help you achieve your career goals?
  • Why this specific program?
