Asian Languages and Literatures Minor
The minor in Asian Language and Literatures offers students the opportunity to master skills of language acquisition and cross-cultural communicative competence while developing multicultural awareness of Japanese-speaking and other Asian-language speaking communities. Our program prepares students to think critically, and allows them to gain knowledge of Asian languages and literatures.
Requirements
Four courses in Japanese or other Asian languages (with Department approval) and two courses of Literature in Translation (LITR) on a Japanese Literature or Asian Literature theme. Students with no previous experience in Japanese will complete the four course Japanese 101-104 sequence and then complete LITR 245 (in the area Japanese Literature in Translation) and one other LITR course. Students are permitted to subsitute an Asian-themed 200 or 300-level course from another Department (such as History, Political Science or Anthropology) for their second LITR required course. Students with previous knowledge of Japanese will begin at a higher level than Japanese 101 and complete a four course language sequence.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Show intermediate proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading and writing skills
- Demonstrate knowledge of content areas (Japanese vocabulary and grammar, Asian literature and traditions, Asian films including in the Anime’ genre)
- Understand the principle characteristics which define Asian culture
- Trace change over time in cultural values
- Examine and describe numerous cultural expressions in order analyze key elements of Asian cultural identity and make cross-cultural, intercultural comparisons
- Establish connections between literature, film, and society in Japanese and other Asian cultures
- Attain better cultural competency
- Foster a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for Japanese and Asian language and literature study
