Stoelinga, Timothy

Bio

Dr. Stoelinga earned his B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1991, his M.Ed. from Loyola University Chicago in 2000, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from UIC in 2007. He is currently the Assistant Director for Math Programs at Loyola's Center for Science and Math Education (CSME). 

 

Dr. Stoelinga's work in mathematics education has focused on the design and study of innovative programs that enhance mathematics learning from early childhood to adulthood. In particular, he studies how curricular supports and programs of teacher inquiry can enhance teaching and learning in mathematics. Dr. Stoelinga is also interested in studying students' development of positive identities as mathematics learners, focusing on issues related to socialization, participation, and identity; particularly for underrepresented students in STEM. 

 

Dr. Stoelinga began his career in education as a high school mathematics and science teacher in Chicago. He also served in district leadership roles in PK-12 mathematics in Chicago and Boulder, Colorado. Prior to his appointment at CSME, Stoelinga designed and studied research-based curriculum projects from pre-K through undergraduate-level mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago's Learning Research Institute. Stoelinga has authored or co-authored numerous publications related to mathematics education, was named a Spencer Doctoral Fellowship finalist, and was the 2017 recipient of UIC's Phillip Wagreich Award for excellence in mathematics education.

Research Interests

Dr. Stoelinga's research interests include equity, identity, and participation in STEM education, design-based research, and mathematics curriculum development.
