Research Assistant
Summary: This position primarily provides support for research-based initiatives. Responsibilities include managing SPSS or other stats apps datasets, deploying and administering Opinio surveys, and providing preliminary data for internal research projects. Students may also be asked to track software licensing, test software deployments, as well as perform other duties as necessary. Applicants must speak and write English fluently, have good overall communication skills, and be detail-oriented.
Responsibilities:
Creates and manages datasets using Excel and SPSS to clean, extract, and visually display data
Deploys, administers, and extracts data from web-based surveys using Opinio
Assists with report preparation for departmental research
Additional responsibilities as assigned which may include assisting with demonstrations of statistical applications, checking applications in computer labs, and other tasks on an as-needed basis, writing/reviewing documentation
Experience:
Quantitative research methods coursework (completed or currently enrolled) in the social sciences, math/statistics, or related disciplines, e.g., higher education
Some familiarity with multivariate statistics via upper level undergraduate courses or graduate quantitative methods courses
Experience with interpreting and summarizing the results of data analysis based on univariate, bivariate, and multivariate procedures
Experience with managing medium to large datasets (cleaning and manipulating data)
Experience with survey research (design, administration, and analysis of data) is desired but not required
Technical skills: The position requires a solid working knowledge of SPSS and/or SAS and Excel. Familiarity with any one of the following applications - HLM, Lisrel, Minitab, Stata, or SYSTAT, or any qualitative data analysis (QDA) application - is preferred as is experience with Opinio or other web-based survey application, e.g., Qualtrics, SNAP, Survey Monkey, Zoomerang, etc.
Reports to: Research Assistants receive daily directives from the ITRS Senior Educational Technologist. Orientation and employment logistics are overseen by the ITRS Technology Coordinator. All ITRS staff and student workers report to the Manager of Instructional Technology & Research Support.
Hours: Research Assistants may work between 15 and 37.5 hours per week during the summer. The number of hours per week depends on both the availability of the student and the amount of work available.
