Advising and Preregistration

Every English major is assigned a departmental advisor. All majors are expected to see their advisors each semester in order to plan their programs and to discuss their progress through the departmental requirements. Formal advising periods are scheduled immediately after the class schedules for the next semester are published. Only by consulting with their advisors can majors preregister for a range of important English courses that are otherwise "reserved": English 390, 393, 394, 395, 396 and 399. Majors should also feel free to consult their advisors about career possibilities, problems they are having in their coursework or any other matters that are directly related to the program of study of the English major.


General Rules of the Undergraduate Program

  • Transfer students who wish to have transferred credit count towards the major should consult the director of undergraduate programs in English. At least six of the 12 courses required for the major must be taken at Loyola.
  • Any grade below C- in an English course will not count towards the major. A student who receives such a grade must either repeat the course (if it is a required course such as English 326) or take another course that fills the requirement.
  • An English major is allowed only one grade below C- in an English course. A student receiving a second grade below C- may be dropped from the major.
  • An English major must maintain at least a 2.0 average in English in order to continue in the major.
  • The University Core Requirement in Literary Knowledge is satisfied by the major sequence of courses.

English Majors and Minors should comply with the policy of the College of Arts and Sciences for “double-dipping” between programs of study with “cross-listed” classes.

  1. Students may not major and minor in the same discipline.
  2. Majors: Not less than 21 credit hours in the individual student’s transcript must be unique to each major; that is, the courses in question are considered as actually fulfilling requirements of one major, not of more than one major.
  3. Minors and interdisciplinary minors: not less than 8 credit hours in the individual student’s transcript must be unique to each minor; that is, the courses in question are considered as actually fulfilling requirements of one minor, not of more than one minor or major.
