The Edward L. Surtz, S.J. Lecture in the Humanities

Founded in 1973, the Surtz lecture promotes interdisciplinary and trans-historical humanistic inquiry in the university today. This annual endowed lecture honors the memory and scholarship of Edward L. Surtz, S.J., a beloved member of the Loyola faculty and distinguished scholar of early modern literature and renaissance humanism, best known for his work on the writings of Thomas More.  

The McElroy Shakespeare Celebration

Loyola University Chicago's Departments of English and Theatre annually host The McElroy Shakespeare Celebration, an annual event founded in 1992, to memorialize the late Professor Bernie McElroy. Melding literary study and theatrical interpretation of William Shakespeare's dramatic works, the event includes an address by a visiting speaker and scenes performed by local actors and Loyola students.

The Martin J. Svaglic Symposium 

Sponsored by the Martin J. Svaglic Chair of Textual Studies & The Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities, this symposium is held in memory of the late Professor Martin J. Svaglic. It features speakers speaking on various subjects centered upon ongoing projects in textual studies.
