The 2019/20 Edward Surtz Memorial Lecture
Founded in 1973, the Edward Surtz Memorial Lecture features innovative trans-historical and cross-disciplinary work in the humanities. Recent speakers have been Robin Fleming (History, Boston College), Emily Wilson (Classics, The University of Pennsylvania), and Ato Quayson (English, NYU). The 2019/20 lecture will be delivered by Robert Alter, Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Alter will speak on his newly completed translation of the Hebrew Bible, in a lecture co-sponsored by the Edward Surtz Lecture Fund, the John Cardinal Cody Endowed Chair in Theology, and the Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, 26 February, 2020. Details to follow.
In addition, the The Edward Surtz Lecture Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2020/2021 lecture. Nominations may be enter through this form by Friday, October 18th.
