SENIOR AWARDS

ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry This award recognizes achievement by an undergraduate student in inorganic chemistry. The award consists of a personalized certificate and a letter of commendation signed by the Chair of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry.

ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry This award consists of a personalize certificate and letter of recognition signed by the Chair for the ACS Div of Organic Chemistry. Criteria- Graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in organic chemistry based on a combination of research experience, coursework and a desire to pursue a career in chemistry.

ACS Division of Physical Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry This award recognizes outstanding achievement by an undergraduate in physical chemistry. Award consists of a certificate, recognition on the Division’s website and a one-year complimentary membership in the Division of Physical Chemistry.

Senior Morrissey Medals: This award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in scholarship to a Chemistry and Biochemistry Major.

Professor Cassaretto Medal:  The medal plus a $500 monetary award is given to a Senior Chemistry or Biochemistry Major in recognition of outstanding achievement in scholarship coupled with generous service to the department. Professor Cassaretto was a former faculty member in the department who also received his Ph.D. degree at Loyola in 1948. He was one of the first to be awarded a Ph.D. at Loyola.

American Institute of Chemists Award: This award is given in recognition of an outstanding graduating senior who has demonstrated a record of achievement. The award consists of a certificate and a one-year membership in the American Institute of Chemists.

Departmental Honors:  In order to graduate with Chemistry/Biochemistry Honors a student needs a 3.5 GPA or higher in Chemistry/Biochemistry courses, exclusive of undergraduate research & Chemistry seminar, but having completed at least one semester of undergraduate research & Chemistry Seminar. (Gold Keys are awarded to students who received a Chemistry/Biochemistry GPA of 3.8 or higher.)

CRC Press Freshman Achievement Award:  This award is given in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry during the freshman year. The award consists of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

Louis Glunz Family-Regis Scholarship – A monetary award for a Junior Chemistry or Biochemistry Major who exhibits academic excellence. The awardee may apply for a summer internship at Regis Technologies, Inc. (as long as the company and the internship program exist).

Carl E. Moore, Sr., Scholarship: This award is given to students taking Undergraduate Research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Deborah Hockman established this award in honor of her Ph.D. advisor; the late Dr. Carl E. Moore, Sr. Dr. Hockman received her Ph.D. in 1981 and was named The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Alumna of the Year in 2011. AWARDED FOR SPRING 22.

Robert Otremba Scholarships: Partial scholarships are awarded from the interest on a $2.5 million endowment created from the estate of  R. Otremba (MS ’63).

Fuchs Scholarship:  This monetary scholarship is awarded to an outstanding freshman Chemistry or Biochemistry major who is enrolled in CHEM 106. The donor, Loyola Alumnus, Dr. Helmuth Fuchs ’62, is currently a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at the State University of New York-Farmingdale.

Cassaretto Scholarship: Two monetary scholarships awarded to sophomore Chemistry or Biochemistry Majors who will be returning as juniors in the fall.  Professor Cassaretto was a former faculty member in the department who also received his Ph.D. degree at Loyola in 1948.  He was one of the first to be awarded a Ph.D. at Loyola.

Babler Needs-Based Chemistry Scholarship: Three awards are being given this year to Chemistry or Biochemistry Majors, currently enrolled in Organic II, who received a grade of C+ or higher in Organic I, have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher in all science courses and exhibits financial need.  Professor Babler is Professor Emeritus here at Loyola and also received his B.S. degree at Loyola ‘66. In addition to the generous support given by Dr. Babler, others (current students, faculty and alum) give to this scholarship.
