Rank and Tenure Committee
The College of Arts and Sciences/Rank and Tenure Committee (CAS/RTC) is charged with the review of dossiers for full-time tenure track (TT) faculty members in CAS who are seeking consideration for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor rank and promotion to Full Professor rank. The committee also reviews the promotion petitions of NTT faculty (Lecturers) for Advanced and Senior Lecturer ranks as well as the petitions of Endowed Chairs for term renewals and the expedited tenure review of incoming administrators or other newly hired faculty members in CAS. The CAS/RTC’s reports are advisory to the Dean’s reviews of candidates and recommendations to the Provost. The Dean undertakes this process in coordination with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. CAS/RTC review is an integral component of the multilayered process designed to thoroughly, fairly, and expeditiously review candidates for the aforementioned ranks and appointments. In the case of TT faculty, the committee’s consideration follows reviews by department entities and chairpersons and precedes the review of the CAS Dean and the Graduate School Dean (for CAS Departments with Graduate Programs), which is followed by university- and provost-level reviews. For NTT faculty, the committee’s consideration follows reviews by department entities and chairpersons and precedes the review of the CAS Dean who is the arbiter of such requests. In both instances, each of the succeeding layers incorporates the evaluations of those preceding them.
Membership Process: The CAS/RTC is a representative body that includes Full Professors, two from each division: Social Sciences, Humanities, and Basic Sciences (see below). A seventh member may be appointed by the Dean to achieve committee balance (e.g., gender and other types of diversity). Senior Lecturers (one from each division) are appointed to the committee for reviews of candidates for promotion on the Lecturer track. All members of the committee serve three-year renewable appointments, for a maximum of two consecutive terms. Members may not serve concurrently on the CAS/RTC and the CAS Developmental Leave Committee. The CAS/RTC members are selected by a CAS Advisory Committee (AC) comprised of CAS department chairs from all three divisions of CAS. The AC will be presented with the names of all Full Professors and Senior Lecturers within CAS, divided by division and department. They will be asked to select for service those candidates, who they deem eligible, building on their in-depth knowledge of the capabilities, interests, and service histories of these Full Professors and Senior Lecturers. The AC will approach the selected candidates and solicit their agreement to serve, informing the Dean who will send a letter formalizing the appointment.
Current Membership Roster (starting year): Professors - Rafal Goebel (Mathematics & Statistics, '22-'23), Dan Becker (Chemistry, '22-'23), Benjamin Johnson (History, '20-'21), Elliot Gorn (History, Fall 2022 only), Joy Gordon (Philosophy, '22-'23), Amy Bohnert (Psychology, '20-'21), Anne Figert (Sociology, Committee Chairperson, '22-'23), Grayson Holmbeck (Psychology, Fall 2022 only), and Tracy Pintchman (Dean's Appointment, Theology, '22-'23). Senior Lecturers - Jennifer Zitzner (Biology, '22-'23), Hong Chen (Modern Languages & Literatures, '22-'23), Brian Endless (Political Science, '21-'22).
